Hungry Brown Bear Cub
Hungry Brown Bear Cub

Khutzeymateen, British Columbia

We watched this first year cub eating grass with his mom for quite some time. He attacked the grass like he hadn't eaten in months. Since he had only been out of hibernation a few weeks, I guess I can't blame him.

Raccoon Kits at the Shore
Raccoon Kits at the Shore

Wallace Island, British Columbia

I followed these two raccoon kits along the shore for quite some time hoping for the perfect shot. The raccoons were in and out of rocks and constantly watching me. I was lucky with this shot. I caught them just as they popped out of a hole in the rocks. It is surprisingly hard to shoot from a small inflatable boat with a long lens.

Mule Deer
Mule Deer

Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

I came across these two deer on the way to another location. The evening backlight was fantastic! With little time to set up, I was able to get just a few shots from the passenger window with the 600mm lens. The deer were spooked by another passing car and quickly swam to the other side. Great eye contact and back light make this the best of the shots.

Sunrise
Sunrise

Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

Light like this lasts only seconds. Amazing color and reflections off the clouds are there, then it's gone. I was patiently waiting as the colors grew and deepened. When the time seemed right, I made several images. Almost immediately the colors started to fade as the sun approached the horizon. I love it when nature conspires to create such an amazing experience.

Hanging Out With The Boys
Hanging Out With The Boys

Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

Morning. 19 degrees. This group of Sandhill Cranes was milling about on the frozen pond. Just hanging out enjoying the morning. No where in particular to go. I like this image. It reminds me of people just hanging out on the street corner.

Nap Time
Nap Time

Khutzeymateen, British Columbia

We had been following this big male for over an hour. He, in turn, had been following a female for much longer. He finally decided it was time to take a break. We quietly went ashore and worked our way closer. He did not seem to mind our presence and settled down for a well earned afternoon nap.

Take Off
Take Off

Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

It was cold in the morning. The pond was frozen. Many cranes were frozen in the ice. This crane stumbled and broke through the thin ice during take off.

Northbound Flight

The sun was just burning through a foggy morning when I saw these Sandhill Cranes in the distance. The elements were all there for just a few seconds. I shot this one frame and they were gone.

Blast Off
Blast Off

Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

I just love it when hundreds of Snow Geese blast off at the same time. Photographing these events is a bit challenging, though. It is easy to get too many birds in the shot. When this happens, the viewer's eye has a hard time finding something to focus on. This image seems too find the right balance. Not too many and no too few.

The Grizzly Forest
The Grizzly Forest

Khutzeymateen, British Columbia

This image reminds me of the primeval forest. Huge strands of moss cover  the trees at the edge of the deep forest. The bear seems to be surveying his domain.

Brown Pelican
Brown Pelican

Piedras Blancas, California

I was there to photograph Elephant Seals. As the sun was going down, I saw this Pelican grooming itself on a rock. The light was amazing. I shot a number of photos before he flew off. The colors were spectacular.

Snowy Egret
Snowy Egret

Martinez, California

Snowy Egrets are common enough that most people don't seem to notice them. They have adapted well to life in the human world. This Egret was looking for breakfast in a pond near Martinez. With the great light and reflections, I could not resist this shot. The bird was so close it barely fit in the frame.

Hooded Merganser
Hooded Merganser

Pleasant Hill, California

People often forget about nature close to home. This female hooded merganser was relaxing in a small pond. I noticed her when I drove by. She swam by with a great reflection behind her. I always look for expression and this is the best of the images I was able to capture.

Brown Bear Closeup
Brown Bear Closeup

Khutzeymateen, British Columbia

It's not often I find my self too close to a bear. I was barely able to get the bear's head in the frame. He was very cooperative, though. I think he liked the photo.

Elephant Seals Sparring

Piedras Blancas, California

It looks like two Elephant Seals sharing a tender moment. In reality, it was two young males sparing. I liked the moment and expression.

Brown Bear and Cub
Brown Bear and Cub

Khutzeymateen, British Columbia

Mom and her two cubs were relaxing on this log near the shoreline. I like this photo because of the cub's tongue. She likes her mom. The second cub was just out of the frame on the right.

Sandhill Crane Landing

I like the shadows of crane's legs on the underside of the wing. I also like the somewhat ungainly pose. Great morning light certainly doesn't hurt either.

Morning Stroll

A lone Sandhill Cranes goes for a stroll on a very cold morning. The pond was iced over. Most of the cranes were stuck in the ice. I like the colors in this image. It just looks cold to me.
